About Chris

Christopher Madden, a resident of New Market, Maryland USA is a longtime working, teaching Artist.

Chris earned a BFA in painting from the Ohio State University.  He was recruited for a ten year apprenticeship at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington DC and became one of the few Banknote Picture Engravers in the United States.  Chris retired as the Lead Engraver in 2019 after a long career that included engraving the intaglio images printed on U.S. currency, postage stamps and the official portrait of President Barack Obama.

Chris studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design, the Art Student League in New York City, Studio Incamminati in Pennsylvania, and at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence Italy.

Chris is currently primarily focused on figurative painting.  He is a member of the TAG Artists Gallery in Frederick Maryland and teaches in the Washington DC area as well as conducting art instruction on Cunard cruise operations world-wide.  Chris is the President of the Master Art Copyists- a select group of artists permitted to paint and study in person from the master works at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. 

His paintings have most recently been juried with distinction into the 2024 Maryland Bienniale and the 2025 London Bienniale.  Chris’ works from the National Gallery were on exhibit at the Washington County Museum of Art in Hagerstown Maryland January-May 2025.
